Psilocybe atlantis is a species of fungus in the family Hymenogastraceae. It is known for its psychoactive properties, primarily due to the presence of psilocybin and psilocin. This species is closely related to other psilocybin mushrooms such as Psilocybe mexicana and Psilocybe tampanensis.

Description[edit | edit source]

Psilocybe atlantis has a cap that is typically 2-4 cm in diameter, convex to plane in shape, and often has a slight umbo. The color of the cap ranges from brown to yellowish-brown, often with a hygrophanous nature, meaning it changes color as it loses moisture. The gills are adnate to adnexed, and the spore print is dark purple-brown. The stipe is 4-8 cm long, slender, and often has a slight swelling at the base. It is typically the same color as the cap or slightly lighter.

Habitat and Distribution[edit | edit source]

Psilocybe atlantis is found in grassy areas, often in meadows and pastures, and sometimes in woodlands. It is known to occur in the southeastern United States, particularly in the state of Georgia. The species fruits in the late summer to early fall.

Psychoactive Properties[edit | edit source]

The psychoactive effects of Psilocybe atlantis are due to the presence of psilocybin and psilocin, which are tryptamine alkaloids. These compounds interact with serotonin receptors in the brain, leading to altered perceptions, mood changes, and hallucinations. The potency of Psilocybe atlantis is considered to be moderate compared to other psilocybin mushrooms.

Legal Status[edit | edit source]

The legal status of Psilocybe atlantis varies by country and region. In many places, the possession, sale, and use of psilocybin-containing mushrooms are illegal. However, some regions have decriminalized or legalized the use of these mushrooms for medical or recreational purposes.
