Psilocybe stuntzii
Psilocybe stuntzii, commonly known as Stuntz's Blue Legs or Blue Ringer, is a species of psilocybin mushroom in the family Hymenogastraceae. This species contains the psychoactive compounds psilocybin and psilocin, which are known for their psychedelic effects.
Taxonomy and Naming[edit | edit source]
The species was first described by mycologist Daniel Stuntz in 1978. The specific epithet stuntzii honors Stuntz for his contributions to mycology.
Description[edit | edit source]
Psilocybe stuntzii has a distinctive appearance characterized by its blue-staining features. The cap is typically 1.5 to 5 cm in diameter, conical to convex in shape, and becomes broadly convex with age. The color ranges from chestnut brown to yellowish-brown, often with a darker center. The gills are adnate to adnexed, starting off pale brown and becoming dark purple-brown as the spores mature. The stipe is 4 to 9 cm long, slender, and often exhibits a bluish hue, especially when bruised.
Distribution and Habitat[edit | edit source]
Psilocybe stuntzii is commonly found in the Pacific Northwest region of the United States, particularly in Washington and Oregon. It typically grows in grassy areas, wood chips, and mulch, often in urban environments such as parks and gardens.
Psychoactive Properties[edit | edit source]
The primary active compounds in Psilocybe stuntzii are psilocybin and psilocin, which are known to induce hallucinations, altered perception of time, and profound changes in thought and mood. These effects are due to the interaction of these compounds with the serotonin receptors in the brain.
Legal Status[edit | edit source]
The legal status of Psilocybe stuntzii varies by country and region. In many places, the possession, sale, and use of psilocybin-containing mushrooms are regulated or prohibited. It is important to be aware of local laws before collecting or consuming these mushrooms.
