Psilocybe yungensis
Psilocybe yungensis is a species of psilocybin mushroom in the family Hymenogastraceae. This species is known for its psychoactive properties, which are primarily due to the presence of psilocybin and psilocin.
Taxonomy[edit | edit source]
The species was first described by Rolf Singer in 1958. It belongs to the genus Psilocybe, which contains many other psychoactive species.
Description[edit | edit source]
Psilocybe yungensis has the following characteristics:
- Cap: The cap is conical to convex, often with a slight umbo, and measures 1-2 cm in diameter. It is hygrophanous, changing color as it loses moisture, typically from a dark brown to a lighter brown or yellowish color.
- Gills: The gills are adnate to adnexed, close, and initially pale brown, becoming darker with age as the spores mature.
- Stipe: The stipe is slender, measuring 3-6 cm in length and 0.1-0.2 cm in thickness. It is typically the same color as the cap or slightly lighter and may have a slight bluish tinge, especially when bruised.
- Spores: The spores are dark purplish-brown, ellipsoid, and measure 10-13 x 6-7 µm.
Habitat and Distribution[edit | edit source]
Psilocybe yungensis is typically found in tropical and subtropical regions. It grows on decaying wood, plant debris, and in humus-rich soil. The species has been reported in various locations in South America, particularly in Bolivia and Peru.
Psychoactive Properties[edit | edit source]
The primary active compounds in Psilocybe yungensis are psilocybin and psilocin, which are known to cause hallucinogenic effects. These compounds interact with serotonin receptors in the brain, leading to altered perceptions, mood changes, and visual and auditory hallucinations.
Legal Status[edit | edit source]
The legal status of Psilocybe yungensis varies by country. In many places, the possession, sale, and use of psilocybin-containing mushrooms are regulated or prohibited. It is important to be aware of local laws and regulations regarding these substances.
