Pulmonary Physician

A pulmonary physician, also known as a pulmonologist, is a medical doctor who specializes in diagnosing and treating diseases and conditions of the respiratory system. The respiratory system includes the lungs, trachea, bronchi, and pleura, among other structures. Pulmonary physicians are experts in managing diseases such as asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), pulmonary fibrosis, pneumonia, tuberculosis, and lung cancer, among others.

Education and Training[edit | edit source]

Becoming a pulmonary physician requires extensive education and training. After completing a medical degree (MD or DO), candidates must undergo residency training in internal medicine, which typically lasts three years. Following this, they must complete a fellowship in pulmonary medicine, which can take an additional two to three years. Some pulmonary physicians also complete a fellowship in critical care medicine, as the fields are closely related.
