Rahel Straus
Rahel Straus (née Goitein; 21 March 1880 – 15 May 1963) was a pioneering German physician and feminist. She was one of the first women to study medicine in Germany and became a prominent advocate for women's rights and social reform.
Early Life and Education[edit | edit source]
Rahel Straus was born in Karlsruhe, Grand Duchy of Baden, into a Jewish family. Her father, Ludwig Goitein, was a well-known rabbi and scholar. She attended the University of Heidelberg, where she was one of the first women to study medicine. She graduated in 1905, becoming one of the first female physicians in Germany.
Career[edit | edit source]
After completing her studies, Straus worked in various hospitals and clinics. She specialized in gynecology and pediatrics, focusing on the health and well-being of women and children. Straus was also deeply involved in the women's rights movement in Germany. She was a member of several organizations advocating for women's suffrage and equal rights.
Personal Life[edit | edit source]
In 1908, Rahel married Elias Straus, a fellow physician. The couple had five children. During the Nazi regime, the Straus family faced persecution due to their Jewish heritage. In 1933, they emigrated to Palestine, where Rahel continued her medical practice and advocacy work.
Later Years and Legacy[edit | edit source]
In Palestine, Rahel Straus continued to work as a physician and remained active in social and feminist causes. She wrote several articles and books on medicine and women's rights. Rahel Straus passed away in 1963 in Jerusalem.
