Rajkot (Gujarati: રાજકોટ) is a city in the state of Gujarat, India. It is the fourth-largest city in Gujarat, after Ahmedabad, Surat, and Vadodara. Rajkot is the administrative headquarters of the Rajkot district.

History[edit | edit source]

Rajkot was founded by Thakur Saheb Vibhaji Ajoji Jadeja in 1612. The city has a rich history and was once the capital of the Saurashtra State before it merged with Bombay State in 1956. Rajkot played a significant role in the Indian independence movement, with notable figures such as Mahatma Gandhi having spent part of their lives here.

. The city is situated on the banks of the Aji River and Nyari River. It has an average elevation of 128 meters above sea level.

Rajkot has a semi-arid climate (Köppen climate classification BSh) with hot, dry summers from mid-March to mid-June, the monsoon season from mid-June to October, and mild winters from November to February.

As of the 2011 Census of India, Rajkot had a population of 1,390,640. The literacy rate is 87.80%, with male literacy at 92.17% and female literacy at 83.17%. The city has a diverse population with Gujarati, Sindhi, and Punjabi communities.

Rajkot is a major industrial hub in Gujarat. The city is known for its jewelry, textile, and automobile industries. Rajkot is also famous for its watch parts and machine tools manufacturing.

Rajkot has a vibrant cultural scene with numerous festivals celebrated throughout the year. The city is known for its Garba and Dandiya Raas during the Navratri festival. Rajkot also has a rich tradition of folk music and dance.
