Residente (born René Juan Pérez Joglar on February 23, 1978) is a Puerto Rican rapper, singer, songwriter, and filmmaker. He is best known as a founding member and lead vocalist of the alternative hip hop band Calle 13. Residente has won numerous awards, including Grammy Awards and Latin Grammy Awards, for his work in the music industry.

Residente was born in Hato Rey, a district of San Juan, Puerto Rico. He is the son of Reynaldo Pérez Ramírez, a labor lawyer, and Flor Joglar de Gracia, an actress. He grew up in a culturally rich environment, which influenced his artistic development from a young age.

Calle 13[edit | edit source]
In 2004, Residente co-founded the band Calle 13 with his stepbrother Visitante, whose real name is Eduardo Cabra. The band quickly gained popularity for their unique blend of hip hop, reggaeton, and Latin music. Their lyrics often address social and political issues, which has earned them both praise and controversy.
Calle 13 released their self-titled debut album in 2005, which included the hit single "Atrévete-te-te." The band went on to release several more albums, including Residente o Visitante (2007), Los de Atrás Vienen Conmigo (2008), and Entren Los Que Quieran (2010). They have won multiple Latin Grammy Awards, including Album of the Year and Record of the Year.

In 2015, Residente announced that he would be pursuing a solo career. His self-titled debut solo album, Residente, was released in 2017. The album was inspired by a DNA test that traced his ancestry to various parts of the world, and it features a diverse range of musical styles and collaborations with artists from different countries.

Residente is known for his outspoken views on social and political issues. He has been a vocal advocate for Puerto Rican independence, human rights, and education. He has also participated in various humanitarian efforts, including relief work following natural disasters in Puerto Rico.
