Restorative dentistry

Restorative dentistry is a branch of dentistry that involves the diagnosis, prevention, and treatment of oral diseases. This field focuses on restoring the function and aesthetics of the oral cavity, particularly the teeth, gums, and supporting structures.

These specialties deal with different aspects of oral restoration, such as the replacement of missing teeth, treatment of tooth decay and gum disease, and the repair of damaged teeth.

Procedures

Restorative dentistry includes a variety of procedures, such as dental fillings, crowns, bridges, implants, and root canal therapy. These procedures aim to restore the normal function and appearance of the teeth and gums.

Dental Fillings

Dental fillings are used to treat cavities or tooth decay. The decayed tooth material is removed, the area is cleaned, and then filled with a filling material.

Crowns

A dental crown is a tooth-shaped cap that is placed over a damaged or decayed tooth to restore its shape, size, strength, and appearance.

Bridges

Dental bridges are used to replace one or more missing teeth. They consist of two or more crowns for the teeth on either side of the gap and a false tooth/teeth in between.

Implants

Dental implants are surgical fixtures placed in the jawbone, which then fuse with the bone over a few months. The implant acts as a replacement for the root of a missing tooth.

Root Canal Therapy

Root canal therapy is a treatment used to repair and save a tooth that is badly decayed or infected. During a root canal procedure, the nerve and pulp are removed, and the inside of the tooth is cleaned and sealed.

Training and Education

Dentists specializing in restorative dentistry typically complete a general dentistry degree followed by additional training in restorative procedures. This may include a residency or fellowship in a specific area of restorative dentistry, such as prosthodontics or endodontics.
