Rhonchus
Rhonchus is a type of abnormal respiratory sound that is characterized by a continuous, coarse, rattling noise that is similar to snoring. It is often caused by secretions in bronchial airways. Rhonchus can be heard in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), pneumonia, and bronchitis.
Causes[edit | edit source]
Rhonchus is typically caused by blockages in the bronchial tubes. These blockages can be due to a variety of factors, including:
- Mucus or other secretions in the airways
- Tumors in the airways
- Inflammation of the airways
- Foreign bodies in the airways
Diagnosis[edit | edit source]
The presence of rhonchus is usually detected during a physical examination using a stethoscope. The sound is often described as a rattling or snoring noise. In some cases, the sound may be heard without the use of a stethoscope.
Treatment[edit | edit source]
Treatment for rhonchus typically involves addressing the underlying cause of the blockage in the bronchial tubes. This may include:
- Medications to reduce inflammation and mucus production
- Bronchodilators to widen the airways
- Antibiotics to treat bacterial infections
- Corticosteroids to reduce inflammation
- Oxygen therapy for severe cases
