Ricky Stuart
Ricky Stuart (born 7 January 1967) is an Australian former professional rugby league footballer and current coach. He is widely regarded as one of the greatest halfbacks in the history of the sport. Stuart has had a significant impact both as a player and as a coach in the National Rugby League (NRL).
Early Life[edit | edit source]
Ricky Stuart was born in Queanbeyan, New South Wales. He attended St Edmund's College, Canberra, where he excelled in both rugby league and rugby union. Stuart initially played rugby union and represented the Australian Schoolboys team before switching to rugby league.
Playing Career[edit | edit source]
Stuart began his professional rugby league career with the Canberra Raiders in 1988. He quickly established himself as a key player for the team, known for his exceptional passing, kicking game, and game management skills. Stuart played a pivotal role in the Raiders' success during the late 1980s and early 1990s.
Canberra Raiders[edit | edit source]
Stuart was instrumental in the Canberra Raiders' premiership victories in 1989, 1990, and 1994. His partnership with fellow Raiders legends such as Mal Meninga, Laurie Daley, and Bradley Clyde was crucial to the team's dominance during this period. Stuart's performances earned him the Clive Churchill Medal in the 1990 Grand Final.

Stuart represented New South Wales in the State of Origin series and played for the Australia national rugby league team. He was part of the Australian team that won the 1992 Rugby League World Cup.
Coaching Career[edit | edit source]
After retiring as a player, Stuart transitioned into coaching. He began his coaching career with the Sydney Roosters in 2002. Under his leadership, the Roosters won the 2002 NRL Grand Final and reached the Grand Final in 2003 and 2004.
Cronulla-Sutherland Sharks[edit | edit source]
Stuart later coached the Cronulla-Sutherland Sharks from 2007 to 2010. Despite facing challenges, he led the team to the preliminary finals in 2008.
Parramatta Eels[edit | edit source]
In 2013, Stuart took on the role of head coach for the Parramatta Eels. However, his tenure was short-lived, and he left the club at the end of the season.
Canberra Raiders[edit | edit source]
Stuart returned to the Canberra Raiders as head coach in 2014. Under his guidance, the Raiders have become a competitive force in the NRL, reaching the Grand Final in 2019.
