Riga Stradiņš University was initially founded as Riga Medical Institute in 1950, primarily focusing on the education of medical personnel. It acquired its current name, Riga Stradiņš University, in 2002, in honor of the distinguished Latvian anatomist, professor Pauls Stradiņš, to emphasize the institution's commitment to excellence in medical and health sciences education, as well as its expansion into social sciences.
