Robert Barchi

Robert L. Barchi is an American academic and neurologist. He served as the 20th President of Rutgers University from 2012 to 2020. Prior to his tenure at Rutgers, Barchi held significant positions at other prestigious institutions, including the University of Pennsylvania and Thomas Jefferson University.

Barchi was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He earned his B.S. degree from Georgetown University in 1968. He then went on to receive his M.D. and Ph.D. degrees from the University of Pennsylvania in 1972 and 1973, respectively.

University of Pennsylvania[edit | edit source]

Barchi began his academic career at the University of Pennsylvania, where he served as a faculty member in the Department of Neurology. He later became the Chair of the Department of Neurology and the Director of the Mahoney Institute of Neurological Sciences. In 1999, he was appointed as the Provost of the University of Pennsylvania, a position he held until 2004.

In 2004, Barchi was appointed as the President of Thomas Jefferson University, a position he held until 2012. During his tenure, he focused on expanding the university's research capabilities and improving its financial stability.

Rutgers University[edit | edit source]

Barchi became the President of Rutgers University in 2012. His tenure was marked by significant events, including the integration of the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey (UMDNJ) into Rutgers, which expanded the university's medical and health sciences programs. He also oversaw the university's entry into the Big Ten Conference and the Committee on Institutional Cooperation.
