Rochelle Lee Shoretz
Rochelle Lee Shoretz (August 27, 1972 – May 31, 2015) was an American lawyer and the founder of Sharsheret, a national not-for-profit organization supporting young Jewish women and their families facing breast cancer.
Early Life and Education[edit | edit source]
Rochelle Shoretz was born in Brooklyn, New York. She attended Yeshiva University High School for Girls and later graduated from Barnard College in 1994. She earned her law degree from Columbia Law School in 1997.
Career[edit | edit source]
After graduating from law school, Shoretz clerked for United States Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg. She later worked as a litigation associate at the law firm Fried, Frank, Harris, Shriver & Jacobson.
Sharsheret[edit | edit source]
In 2001, after being diagnosed with breast cancer at the age of 28, Shoretz founded Sharsheret, which means "chain" in Hebrew. The organization provides support and resources for young Jewish women diagnosed with breast cancer and ovarian cancer. Sharsheret offers a range of services, including peer support, educational resources, and community programs.
Advocacy and Impact[edit | edit source]
Shoretz was a prominent advocate for breast cancer awareness and support. She served on several national advisory committees, including the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's Advisory Committee on Breast Cancer in Young Women. She was also a member of the Federal Advisory Committee on Breast Cancer in Young Women.
Personal Life[edit | edit source]
Rochelle Shoretz was married and had two sons. She continued to lead Sharsheret and advocate for breast cancer awareness until her death on May 31, 2015, from complications related to breast cancer.
Legacy[edit | edit source]
Shoretz's work has had a lasting impact on the breast cancer community, particularly among young Jewish women. Sharsheret continues to provide vital support and resources to those affected by breast cancer and ovarian cancer.
