Rochester is a city in the U.S. state of New York, and the county seat of Monroe County. It is located on the southern shore of Lake Ontario in the western part of the state. Rochester is the fourth most populous city in New York, after New York City, Buffalo, and Yonkers.

Rochester was one of America's first boomtowns, initially due to the fertile Genesee River Valley, which gave rise to numerous flour mills, and later as a manufacturing hub. The city was founded in 1817 and quickly became known as "The Flour City". Later, it became known as "The Flower City" due to its extensive nurseries.
