Ron Joyce (October 19, 1930 – January 31, 2019) was a Canadian businessman, best known for co-founding the Tim Hortons chain of coffee and doughnut shops with Tim Horton himself. Born in Tatamagouche, Nova Scotia, Joyce's journey from a small-town boy to a magnate of one of Canada's most iconic brands is a testament to his entrepreneurial spirit and business acumen.

Early Life[edit | edit source]

Ron Joyce grew up in Tatamagouche, a small village in Nova Scotia. His early life was marked by modest means, which instilled in him a strong work ethic. After serving in the Royal Canadian Navy, Joyce decided to venture into the world of business, a decision that would eventually lead to the creation of a Canadian business empire.

Career[edit | edit source]

In the early 1960s, Joyce moved to Hamilton, Ontario, where he worked as a police officer. It was during this time that he met Tim Horton, a professional ice hockey player, who had recently opened a doughnut shop in Hamilton. Seeing the potential in Horton's business, Joyce invested in the franchise and became a full partner in 1967. Following Horton's death in a car crash in 1974, Joyce bought out the Horton family's shares and took full control of the company, spearheading its expansion across Canada and into parts of the United States.

Under Joyce's leadership, Tim Hortons became synonymous with Canadian culture, known for its coffee, doughnuts, and other fast food items. Joyce's business philosophy centered around franchisee relationships, community involvement, and customer service, which became the cornerstone of Tim Hortons' success.

Philanthropy[edit | edit source]

Beyond his business achievements, Ron Joyce was also known for his philanthropic efforts. He established the Ron Joyce Foundation, which focuses on providing support to children and youth in need across Canada. His contributions to various causes, including healthcare and education, have left a lasting impact on Canadian society.

Legacy[edit | edit source]

Ron Joyce's legacy is not only visible in the ubiquitous presence of Tim Hortons across Canada but also in his contributions to philanthropy and community service. He was appointed to the Order of Canada in 1992, recognizing his business success and philanthropic efforts. Joyce passed away on January 31, 2019, leaving behind a legacy of entrepreneurship and charity.
