Roy Yamaguchi is a notable chef and founder of the Roy's Restaurant chain. He is recognized for his significant contributions to the culinary world, particularly in the fusion of Hawaiian and Japanese cuisine.
Early Life and Education[edit | edit source]
Roy Yamaguchi was born and raised in Tokyo, Japan. He moved to New York City to study at the Culinary Institute of America, where he graduated in 1976.
Career[edit | edit source]
After graduation, Yamaguchi worked in several prestigious restaurants in Los Angeles, including L'Ermitage and Le Serene. In 1984, he opened his first restaurant, 385 North, in Hollywood.
In 1988, Yamaguchi opened the first Roy's Restaurant in Honolulu, Hawaii. The restaurant quickly gained popularity for its unique blend of Hawaiian and Asian flavors, a style that Yamaguchi coined as "Hawaiian Fusion Cuisine". Today, there are over 30 Roy's Restaurants worldwide.
Achievements and Recognition[edit | edit source]
Yamaguchi's innovative approach to cuisine has earned him numerous awards and recognition. In 1993, he was awarded the prestigious James Beard Award for Best Chef: Pacific Northwest. He is also the first chef from Hawaii to host a television cooking show, Hawaii Cooks with Roy Yamaguchi, which has been broadcasted in over 60 countries.

Yamaguchi is married and has two daughters. He is also an active member of the community, founding the Roy Yamaguchi Culinary Scholarship to support aspiring chefs in Hawaii.
