From WikiMD's Wellness Encyclopedia

Royal Greenland is a fishing company based in Greenland, specializing in seafood products, particularly cold-water prawns, Greenland halibut, and other pelagic fish. The company is considered one of the world's leading producers of seafood, with a history that dates back to the 18th century.

History[edit | edit source]

Royal Greenland was established in 1774 as the Royal Greenland Trading Department by the Danish monarchy. The company was initially created to establish a monopoly on the trade in Greenland, and it was the sole manager of all commercial activities in the country for more than two centuries.

In 1979, the company was restructured and renamed as Royal Greenland. It has since expanded its operations to include fishing, processing, sales, and distribution of seafood products.

Operations[edit | edit source]

Royal Greenland operates a fleet of fishing vessels and trawlers, as well as several seafood processing plants in Greenland and Denmark. The company's products are sold in more than 50 countries worldwide, with a significant presence in Europe, North America, and Asia.

The company's primary product is the cold-water prawn, which is caught in the icy waters of the North Atlantic and Arctic Ocean. These prawns are known for their sweet and slightly salty taste, and they are a popular ingredient in a variety of dishes.

In addition to prawns, Royal Greenland also produces a range of other seafood products, including Greenland halibut, cod, snow crab, and lumpfish roe.

Sustainability[edit | edit source]

Royal Greenland is committed to sustainable fishing practices. The company adheres to the principles of the Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) and it has several MSC-certified fisheries. Royal Greenland also works closely with local communities in Greenland to ensure the sustainable use of marine resources.
