Ruzena Bajcsy

Ruzena Bajcsy is a computer scientist renowned for her contributions to the fields of robotics, artificial intelligence, and computer vision. She is a professor of electrical engineering and computer science at the University of California, Berkeley.

Early Life and Education[edit | edit source]

Ruzena Bajcsy was born on May 7, 1933, in Bratislava, Czechoslovakia. She earned her M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in electrical engineering from the Slovak University of Technology in Bratislava. She later received a second Ph.D. in computer science from Stanford University.

Career[edit | edit source]

Bajcsy began her academic career at the University of Pennsylvania, where she founded the General Robotics, Automation, Sensing and Perception Laboratory (GRASP Lab) in 1978. The GRASP Lab became a leading center for research in robotics and computer vision.

In 2001, Bajcsy joined the University of California, Berkeley, where she has continued her research in robotics, artificial intelligence, and computer vision. She has also served as the director of the Center for Information Technology Research in the Interest of Society (CITRIS).

Bajcsy's research has significantly advanced the fields of robotics and computer vision. She is known for her work on active perception, which involves the use of sensors and actuators to improve the perception capabilities of robots.
