Ryan Higa (born June 6, 1990), also known by his YouTube username nigahiga, is an American YouTuber, comedian, actor, and musician. He is best known for his comedic videos on YouTube, which have garnered millions of subscribers and billions of views.

Early Life[edit | edit source]

Ryan Higa was born in Hilo, Hawaii, to Wendell and Luci Higa. He has an older brother named Kyle. Higa is of Japanese descent. He attended Waiakea High School, where he was a successful judo competitor and held a black belt rank. After graduating in 2008, he briefly attended the University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV) to study nuclear medicine.

Ryan Higa began his YouTube career in 2006, initially posting videos of himself and his friends lip-syncing to popular songs. His channel, nigahiga, quickly gained popularity for its comedic content, including skits, parodies, and original series.

One of Higa's earliest viral hits was the video "How to be Ninja," which was followed by other "How to be" videos, such as "How to be Gangster" and "How to be Emo." These videos helped him gain a substantial following. By 2009, nigahiga became the most subscribed channel on YouTube, a position it held until 2011.
