SARS-CoV-2 Delta Variant

The SARS-CoV-2 Delta variant, also known as B.1.617.2, is a variant of the SARS-CoV-2 virus, which is responsible for the COVID-19 pandemic. First identified in India in October 2020, the Delta variant has since spread globally and has been associated with increased transmissibility and severity of disease.

Characteristics[edit | edit source]

The Delta variant is characterized by a number of mutations in the spike protein of the SARS-CoV-2 virus, which is the part of the virus that attaches to human cells. These mutations, including L452R and P681R, may increase the virus's ability to infect cells and evade the immune system.

Transmission[edit | edit source]

The Delta variant is believed to be approximately 60% more transmissible than the Alpha variant (B.1.1.7), which was previously the dominant strain of SARS-CoV-2. This increased transmissibility has led to the rapid global spread of the Delta variant.

Impact on Vaccines[edit | edit source]

While some studies have suggested that the Delta variant may reduce the effectiveness of COVID-19 vaccines, most evidence indicates that vaccines remain highly effective at preventing severe disease and hospitalization.

Global Impact[edit | edit source]

The Delta variant has had a significant impact on the global trajectory of the COVID-19 pandemic, leading to increased cases and hospitalizations in many countries. It has also prompted changes in public health guidelines and strategies for controlling the spread of the virus.
