Sabatia campestris
Sabatia campestris, commonly known as prairie rose-gentian, is a species of flowering plant in the Gentianaceae family. It is native to the central and southern United States, particularly in the Great Plains and Gulf Coast regions.
Description[edit | edit source]
Sabatia campestris is an annual herb that typically grows to a height of 10-50 cm. The plant has slender, erect stems that are often branched. The leaves are opposite, simple, and sessile, with a lanceolate to ovate shape. The flowers are the most distinctive feature, with five pink to rose-colored petals that form a star-like shape. The center of the flower is typically yellow, creating a striking contrast with the petals. The blooming period is from late spring to early summer.
Habitat[edit | edit source]
Sabatia campestris thrives in open, sunny areas with well-drained soils. It is commonly found in prairies, meadows, and along roadsides. The plant prefers sandy or loamy soils and can tolerate a range of pH levels.
Distribution[edit | edit source]
The species is distributed across the central and southern United States, from Texas and Louisiana northward to Kansas and Missouri. It is also found in parts of the southeastern United States, including Alabama and Georgia.
Ecology[edit | edit source]
Sabatia campestris plays a role in local ecosystems by providing nectar for various pollinators, including bees and butterflies. The plant is also a part of the diet for some herbivorous insects.
Conservation Status[edit | edit source]
The conservation status of Sabatia campestris varies by region. In some areas, it is considered common and not at risk, while in others, habitat loss and changes in land use have led to declines in its population.
Uses[edit | edit source]
While Sabatia campestris is not widely used in traditional medicine or horticulture, it is appreciated for its ornamental value in wildflower gardens and natural landscaping projects.
Related Species[edit | edit source]
Sabatia campestris is closely related to other species in the Sabatia genus, such as Sabatia angularis and Sabatia stellaris.
