Sabuncuoğlu Şerafeddin (1385–1470) was a prominent Ottoman physician and surgeon of the 15th century. He is most known for his contributions to the field of medicine and surgery, particularly in the development of surgical techniques and instruments.

Sabuncuoğlu Şerafeddin was born in 1385 in Amasya, a city in the northern part of modern-day Turkey. He received his early education in Amasya and later moved to Istanbul for higher studies. He studied medicine under the guidance of several renowned physicians of his time.

Career[edit | edit source]

Sabuncuoğlu Şerafeddin served as the chief physician at the Amasya Hospital, where he practiced and taught medicine. He is known to have written several medical texts, the most famous of which is the Cerrahiyyetu'l-Haniyye (Imperial Surgery), one of the first illustrated surgical atlases.

Contributions to Medicine[edit | edit source]

Sabuncuoğlu Şerafeddin's Cerrahiyyetu'l-Haniyye is considered a landmark in the history of surgery. The book contains detailed descriptions of various surgical procedures, including caesarean section, amputation, and tumor removal. It also includes illustrations of surgical instruments, many of which were designed by Sabuncuoğlu himself.

Sabuncuoğlu Şerafeddin's work has had a lasting impact on the field of medicine. His surgical techniques and instruments have been studied and used by physicians for centuries. Today, he is remembered as one of the pioneers of Ottoman medicine and surgery.
