Dame Sally Claire Davies (born 24 November 1949) is a prominent British physician and academic, known for her role as the Chief Medical Officer for England from 2010 to 2019. Sally Davies was born in Birmingham, England. She attended Edgbaston High School for Girls and later studied medicine at University of Manchester, where she graduated with a Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery (MB ChB) in 1972. She furthered her education with a Master of Science (MSc) in haematology from the University of London.

Davies began her medical career as a haematologist at Central Middlesex Hospital in London. She later joined the National Health Service (NHS) and became a consultant in haematology at Hammersmith Hospital. Her work focused on sickle cell disease and thalassemia.

In addition to her clinical work, Davies has been involved in academic research, particularly in the field of haematology. She has published numerous papers on sickle cell disease and has been involved in various research projects funded by the Medical Research Council.
