Sangamo Therapeutics is a biopharmaceutical company that focuses on the research, development, and commercialization of genome editing and gene therapy products. The company was founded in 1995 and is headquartered in Richmond, California.

History[edit | edit source]

Sangamo Therapeutics was established in 1995 by Edward Lanphier. The company was initially focused on the development of zinc finger proteins for therapeutic applications. In 2017, Sangamo entered into a collaboration with Pfizer to develop a gene therapy for amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS).

Research and Development[edit | edit source]

Sangamo's research and development efforts are primarily focused on the use of zinc finger proteins for genome editing and gene therapy. The company's proprietary technology, known as Zinc Finger Nuclease (ZFN), allows for the precise editing of genes within the human genome. This technology has potential applications in the treatment of a wide range of diseases, including genetic disorders, infectious diseases, and cancers.

In addition to its ZFN technology, Sangamo is also developing a platform for the delivery of gene therapies. This platform, known as Adeno-Associated Virus (AAV), allows for the delivery of therapeutic genes directly into patient cells.

Partnerships[edit | edit source]

Sangamo has entered into several strategic partnerships to advance its research and development efforts. These include collaborations with Pfizer, Bioverativ, and Shire Pharmaceuticals. These partnerships have provided Sangamo with additional resources and expertise to accelerate the development of its therapeutic programs.

Products[edit | edit source]

Sangamo's product pipeline includes several gene therapies that are currently in clinical development. These include treatments for Hemophilia A, Hemophilia B, and Mucopolysaccharidosis II (MPS II), also known as Hunter syndrome.
