Scammony

Scammony is a convolvulaceous plant, Convolvulus scammonia, of western Asia, and a resin obtained from its root. The dried root of this plant is used in medicine.

The Convolvulus scammonia is a twining perennial, bearing clusters of creamy yellow flowers. The root is thick and fleshy, up to 1 meter long and yields a milky juice from which the resin is derived.

Uses[edit | edit source]

Scammony is used in medicine as a purgative. It is a powerful cathartic used in small doses and combined with other medicines. It is also used in the treatment of liver diseases and gastrointestinal disorders.

Preparation[edit | edit source]

The resin is obtained by incising the living root. It is then dried and powdered for use in medicine. The resin contains a number of active compounds, including scammonin and convolvulin.

Side Effects[edit | edit source]

Scammony can cause severe diarrhea and abdominal pain. It should be used with caution and under the supervision of a healthcare professional.
