Sensory integrative dysfunction
Sensory Integrative Dysfunction (SID), also known as Sensory Processing Disorder (SPD), is a condition in which the brain has trouble receiving and responding to information that comes in through the senses. This can involve difficulties processing information from the five traditional senses (sight, hearing, touch, taste, and smell), as well as from the senses that control body awareness (proprioception) and movement (vestibular sense).
Overview[edit | edit source]
Sensory Integrative Dysfunction affects individuals differently, with symptoms ranging from mild to severe. It can impact a person's emotional regulation, motor skills, and ability to perform daily tasks. Children with SID may appear clumsy, have difficulty engaging in play or social interactions, and may be either overly sensitive to sensory stimuli or seek out intense sensory experiences.
Causes[edit | edit source]
The exact causes of Sensory Integrative Dysfunction are not fully understood, but it is believed to involve genetic and environmental factors. Research suggests that disruptions in the sensory integration process may begin in the womb or early in life as the brain develops.
Diagnosis[edit | edit source]
Diagnosing SID involves a comprehensive evaluation by a team of healthcare professionals, often including an occupational therapist with expertise in sensory integration therapy. Assessments may include observations of behavior, parent or teacher reports, and standardized testing.
Treatment[edit | edit source]
Treatment for Sensory Integrative Dysfunction is highly individualized and may include occupational therapy with a sensory integration approach. This therapy aims to help individuals better process and respond to sensory information. Strategies may also involve creating supportive environments at home and school, as well as teaching coping skills for managing sensory overload.
Impact[edit | edit source]
Without appropriate intervention, children with Sensory Integrative Dysfunction may face challenges in academic performance, social interactions, and overall quality of life. However, with early and targeted support, many individuals can learn to manage their sensory processing issues effectively.
