Sidney Pestka (May 29, 1936 – December 22, 2016) was an American biochemist and a key figure in the development of interferons. He is often referred to as the "father of interferon" for his pioneering work in the field of molecular biology and biotechnology.

Early Life and Education[edit | edit source]

Sidney Pestka was born in Newark, New Jersey. He earned his undergraduate degree from Princeton University and his medical degree from the University of Pennsylvania.

Career and Research[edit | edit source]

Pestka began his career at the National Institutes of Health (NIH), where he worked under the guidance of Marshall W. Nirenberg, a Nobel laureate. During his time at the NIH, Pestka made significant contributions to the understanding of the genetic code and protein synthesis.

Interferon Research[edit | edit source]

In the early 1970s, Pestka joined the faculty at Rutgers University, where he focused on the study of interferons. He successfully purified and characterized interferons, which are proteins that play a crucial role in the body's defense against viral infections. His work laid the foundation for the development of interferon-based therapies for various diseases, including hepatitis and certain types of cancer.

Biotechnology Contributions[edit | edit source]

Pestka founded PBL Assay Science (formerly known as Pestka Biomedical Laboratories) to commercialize interferon research. His company developed various interferon products and assays that are widely used in research and clinical settings.

Awards and Honors[edit | edit source]

Sidney Pestka received numerous awards for his contributions to science, including the National Medal of Technology and Innovation in 2001. He was also a member of the National Academy of Sciences and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences.

Personal Life[edit | edit source]

Pestka was married and had three children. He passed away on December 22, 2016, at the age of 80.

Legacy[edit | edit source]

Sidney Pestka's work has had a lasting impact on the fields of molecular biology and biotechnology. His contributions to the understanding and application of interferons continue to benefit medical research and treatment.
