Sir Humphrey Weld[edit | edit source]

Sir Humphrey Weld (1612–1685) was an English landowner and politician who sat in the House of Commons at various times between 1640 and 1679. He was a Royalist during the English Civil War.

Early Life[edit | edit source]

Sir Humphrey Weld was born in 1612, the son of Humphrey Weld and his wife Mary Stourton. He was educated at St John's College, Oxford and was admitted to Lincoln's Inn in 1631.

Career[edit | edit source]

In April 1640, Weld was elected Member of Parliament for Christchurch in the Short Parliament. He was re-elected MP for Christchurch for the Long Parliament in November 1640. Weld was a Royalist during the English Civil War and was disabled from sitting in parliament in 1644.

Later Life and Death[edit | edit source]

After the Restoration, Weld was elected MP for Lymington in 1661 and sat until 1679. He was appointed High Sheriff of Hampshire for 1661–62. Weld died at the age of 73 and was buried at Lulworth.

Personal Life[edit | edit source]

Weld married Clare Arundell, daughter of Thomas Arundell, 1st Baron Arundell of Wardour, and had several children. His son John Weld succeeded him.

Legacy[edit | edit source]

The Weld family still owns the Lulworth Estate, which includes Lulworth Castle, built by Thomas Howard, 3rd Viscount Howard of Bindon, in the early 17th century.
