Sittning

From WikiMD's Wellness Encyclopedia

Sittning is a traditional Swedish social event that typically involves a meal, drinking, and singing. The term "sittning" is derived from the Swedish word "sitta", which means "to sit". The event is often organized by student nations or societies at universities and is a significant part of Swedish student culture.

History[edit | edit source]

The tradition of the sittning dates back to the Middle Ages, when it was common for people to gather for meals and entertainment. Over time, these gatherings evolved into more formal events, with specific rules and traditions.

Format[edit | edit source]

A typical sittning involves a three-course meal, with each course followed by a round of songs and toasts. The event is usually hosted by a toastmaster, who leads the singing and toasting. The songs are often traditional Swedish folk songs, but can also include popular music or songs written specifically for the event.

Rules[edit | edit source]

There are several rules that are typically followed at a sittning. For example, it is customary for guests to remain seated during the meal and the singing. It is also common for guests to participate in "skåls", or toasts, throughout the event. These toasts are often accompanied by a shot of schnapps or other strong alcohol.

Variations[edit | edit source]

While the basic format of a sittning is fairly consistent, there can be variations depending on the specific event or group hosting it. For example, some sittnings may include games or other activities in addition to the meal and singing. Others may have a specific theme, with the food, decorations, and songs all relating to that theme.
