Solar Plexus

The Solar Plexus or Celiac Plexus is a complex network of nerves located in the abdomen, where the celiac trunk, superior mesenteric artery, and renal arteries branch from the abdominal aorta. It is behind the stomach and the omental bursa, and in front of the crura of the diaphragm, on the level of the first lumbar vertebra.

The Solar Plexus is the largest of the autonomic plexuses and is the most complex of the sympathetic chains. It is often referred to as the "abdominal brain" because it is a crucial center for the reception and distribution of impulses.

Anatomy[edit | edit source]

The Solar Plexus is formed by the greater and lesser splanchnic nerves of both sides, and fibers from the anterior and posterior vagal trunks. The Solar Plexus is located in the epigastric region, which is located in the upper central region of the abdomen. It is positioned behind the stomach and in front of the diaphragm. It is composed of many smaller plexuses; such as the hepatic, splenic, and gastric plexuses, which supply the viscera.

Function[edit | edit source]

The Solar Plexus plays a crucial role in the functioning of the stomach, liver, pancreas, gallbladder, spleen, kidneys, intestines, adrenal glands, and blood vessels. It also plays a role in the regulation of the heart and lungs. The Solar Plexus is also involved in the body's fight-or-flight response, which is a physiological reaction that occurs in response to a perceived harmful event, attack, or threat to survival.

Clinical Significance[edit | edit source]

Damage to the Solar Plexus can cause serious problems, as it is a crucial center for the reception and distribution of impulses. Symptoms of a damaged Solar Plexus can include abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, and difficulty with digestion. In some cases, damage to the Solar Plexus can be life-threatening.
