Solon Borland

Solon Borland (September 21, 1808 – January 1, 1864) was an American politician, physician, and military officer. He served as a United States Senator from Arkansas and was a prominent figure in the American Civil War.

Early Life and Education[edit | edit source]

Solon Borland was born in Norfolk, Virginia. He pursued classical studies and graduated from the University of Pennsylvania in 1831. Borland studied medicine and became a practicing physician.

Medical Career[edit | edit source]

Borland practiced medicine in Norfolk and later in Little Rock, Arkansas. He gained a reputation as a skilled physician and was involved in various medical societies.

Political Career[edit | edit source]

Borland's political career began when he was appointed as the United States Marshal for the District of Arkansas in 1843. He was later elected as a Democrat to the United States Senate to fill the vacancy caused by the resignation of Ambrose Hundley Sevier. He served from May 29, 1848, to March 3, 1853.

During his tenure in the Senate, Borland was known for his strong support of states' rights and his advocacy for the expansion of slavery into the new territories acquired from the Mexican-American War.

Diplomatic Service[edit | edit source]

After leaving the Senate, Borland was appointed by President Franklin Pierce as the United States Minister to Nicaragua in 1853. His tenure was marked by controversy, including an incident where he was attacked by a mob in Greytown (now San Juan de Nicaragua).

Military Service[edit | edit source]

With the outbreak of the American Civil War, Borland joined the Confederate States Army. He was commissioned as a brigadier general and was involved in the defense of Arkansas.

Later Life and Death[edit | edit source]

After the war, Borland returned to his medical practice. He died on January 1, 1864, in Houston, Texas, and was buried in the Confederate Cemetery in Little Rock, Arkansas.

Solon Borland is remembered for his contributions to both the medical field and his political and military service. His life reflects the complexities and conflicts of mid-19th century America.
