Solothurn is a city located in the north-west of Switzerland, and is the capital of the Canton of Solothurn. The city is known for its baroque architecture, which is considered among the finest in Switzerland, and its cultural significance.

The history of Solothurn dates back to the Roman era, when it was known as Salodurum. It was a significant trading center due to its strategic location on the Aare River. The city gained importance in the Middle Ages, becoming a Free Imperial City in the Holy Roman Empire in 1218.
