Women on Waves

Women on Waves is a non-profit organization founded in 1999 by Dutch physician Rebecca Gomperts. Its primary mission is to prevent unwanted pregnancies and unsafe abortions worldwide. The Women on Waves ship is equipped with a clinic where medical abortions can be performed safely by qualified medical personnel. The ship sails to a port in the target country and then moves into international waters, usually 12 nautical miles from the coast, to provide abortions. The organization uses mifepristone and misoprostol, drugs approved by the World Health Organization for medical abortion, to terminate pregnancies up to nine weeks.

In addition to providing abortion services, Women on Waves also offers sexual health education, contraception, and workshops on women's rights and health. The organization aims to raise awareness about the importance of safe abortion access and to challenge restrictive abortion laws.
