Sri Lankan Americans
Sri Lankan Americans are Americans of Sri Lankan descent. They are a part of the larger South Asian American community and have a diverse cultural heritage that includes Sinhalese, Tamil, Moor, and Burgher ethnic groups.
History[edit | edit source]
The history of Sri Lankan Americans dates back to the mid-20th century when the first significant wave of immigrants arrived in the United States. Many of these early immigrants were students and professionals seeking higher education and employment opportunities. The Immigration and Nationality Act of 1965 played a crucial role in facilitating the entry of Sri Lankans into the United States by removing previous quotas that limited immigration from Asia.
Demographics[edit | edit source]
According to the United States Census Bureau, there are approximately 50,000 Sri Lankan Americans residing in the United States. The largest populations are found in states such as California, New York, New Jersey, and Texas. The community is known for its high levels of educational attainment and professional success, with many individuals working in fields such as medicine, engineering, information technology, and academia.
Culture[edit | edit source]
Sri Lankan Americans maintain a rich cultural heritage that includes traditional Sri Lankan cuisine, music, and dance. Cultural organizations and community centers play a vital role in preserving and promoting Sri Lankan culture in the United States. Festivals such as the Sinhala and Tamil New Year and Vesak are celebrated with great enthusiasm within the community.
Religion[edit | edit source]
The religious composition of Sri Lankan Americans is diverse, reflecting the pluralistic nature of Sri Lankan society. The community includes adherents of Buddhism, Hinduism, Islam, and Christianity. Religious institutions such as Buddhist temples, Hindu temples, mosques, and churches serve as important centers for spiritual and community activities.
