St. Albans (city), Vermont
St. Albans is a city in Franklin County, Vermont, in the United States. It is located in the northwestern part of the state, near the Canada–United States border. The city is surrounded by the town of St. Albans Town, which is a separate municipality. As of the 2020 census, the population of St. Albans city was approximately 6,877.
History[edit | edit source]
St. Albans was chartered in 1763 and named after St Albans, Hertfordshire, England. The area was first settled in 1785. The city played a significant role during the American Civil War when it was the site of the St. Albans Raid in 1864, the northernmost land action of the war. Confederate soldiers attacked the city, robbing three banks and killing one resident before fleeing to Canada.

St. Albans is located at the coordinates 44°48′N 73°5′W. The city covers a total area of 2.0 square miles (5.2 km²), all of it land. It is situated near Lake Champlain, which provides recreational opportunities and scenic views.
Economy[edit | edit source]
The economy of St. Albans has historically been based on agriculture, particularly dairy farming. In recent years, the city has diversified its economy with the growth of manufacturing, retail, and service industries. The city is home to the headquarters of Ben & Jerry's, a well-known ice cream company.
Education[edit | edit source]
St. Albans is served by the Maple Run Unified School District, which includes St. Albans City School, St. Albans Town Educational Center, and Bellows Free Academy. The city also has a branch of the Community College of Vermont.
Transportation[edit | edit source]
St. Albans is accessible via Interstate 89, which connects the city to Burlington and Montreal. The city is also served by the Amtrak Vermonter line, which provides rail service to Washington, D.C. and St. Albans station.
