Stephen Darby (born 6 October 1988) is an English former professional footballer who played as a right-back. He is best known for his time at Liverpool F.C., Bradford City A.F.C., and Bolton Wanderers F.C..

Early Life[edit | edit source]

Stephen Darby was born in Liverpool, Merseyside, England. He joined the Liverpool F.C. Academy at a young age and progressed through the ranks.

Club Career[edit | edit source]

Liverpool[edit | edit source]

Darby made his first-team debut for Liverpool F.C. on 12 November 2008 in a UEFA Champions League match against Olympique de Marseille. Despite limited first-team opportunities, he was part of the squad that won the FA Youth Cup in 2006 and 2007.

Swindon Town[edit | edit source]

In 2010, Darby was loaned to Swindon Town F.C. where he made 21 appearances. His performances were solid, and he gained valuable first-team experience.

Notts County[edit | edit source]

Darby spent the 2011-2012 season on loan at Notts County F.C., making 22 appearances and scoring one goal.

Rochdale[edit | edit source]

In 2012, he was loaned to Rochdale A.F.C., where he made 14 appearances.

Bradford City[edit | edit source]

Darby signed for Bradford City A.F.C. in 2012. He became a key player for the team, helping them reach the 2013 Football League Cup Final and win promotion to League One in the same season. He was named the club's captain in 2014 and made over 200 appearances for the club.

Bolton Wanderers[edit | edit source]

In 2017, Darby signed for Bolton Wanderers F.C.. However, his time at the club was cut short due to a diagnosis of motor neurone disease (MND) in 2018, which led to his retirement from professional football.

Darby represented England U19 and England U20 teams during his youth career.

Personal Life[edit | edit source]

Stephen Darby is married to Steph Houghton, the captain of the England women's national football team and Manchester City W.F.C..

Motor Neurone Disease Diagnosis[edit | edit source]

In September 2018, Darby was diagnosed with motor neurone disease (MND). Following his diagnosis, he retired from professional football and has since been involved in raising awareness and funds for MND research.
