Stephen I. Katz

Stephen I. Katz (1941-2018) was an eminent dermatologist and immunologist, best known for his contributions to the field of autoimmune diseases. He served as the Director of the National Institute of Arthritis and Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases (NIAMS) at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) from 1995 until his death in 2018.

Early Life and Education[edit | edit source]

Katz was born in 1941 in New York City. He attended the University of Pennsylvania for his undergraduate studies, where he developed an interest in biology and medicine. He then pursued his medical degree from the Tulane University School of Medicine, followed by a Ph.D. in immunology from the University of London.

Career[edit | edit source]

Katz began his career at the National Cancer Institute (NCI) as a clinical associate. He then moved to the Dermatology Branch of the NCI, where he served as Chief from 1977 to 1980. In 1980, he was appointed as the Director of the Dermatology Branch, a position he held until 1995.

In 1995, Katz was appointed as the Director of the NIAMS, a position he held until his death in 2018. During his tenure, he oversaw significant advancements in the understanding and treatment of rheumatoid arthritis, lupus, psoriasis, and other autoimmune and skin diseases.

Research and Contributions[edit | edit source]

Katz's research primarily focused on the immunopathogenesis of cutaneous T cell lymphoma and the role of cytokines in inflammatory skin diseases. His work has significantly contributed to the understanding of the pathogenesis of autoimmune and inflammatory diseases.

Legacy[edit | edit source]

Katz's contributions to the field of dermatology and immunology have had a lasting impact. His dedication to advancing medical research and patient care has been recognized with numerous awards and honors, including the Public Health Service Superior Service Award and the American Academy of Dermatology's Master Dermatologist Award.
