Stirofos
Stirofos is a organophosphate insecticide that was first synthesized in the 1960s. It is a colorless, odorless solid that is highly toxic to both humans and animals.
Chemical Properties[edit | edit source]
Stirofos, also known as Rabon, is an organophosphate compound with the chemical formula C9H11Cl3NO4PS. It is a white crystalline solid that is soluble in water and most organic solvents. The compound is stable under normal conditions, but it can decompose when heated, producing toxic fumes of phosphorus, nitrogen, and chlorine.
Uses[edit | edit source]
Stirofos is primarily used as an insecticide in agriculture. It is effective against a wide range of pests, including aphids, mites, and whiteflies. It is also used in veterinary medicine to control external parasites on livestock.
Toxicity[edit | edit source]
Like other organophosphates, stirofos is highly toxic. It inhibits the activity of acetylcholinesterase, an enzyme that is essential for nerve function. This can lead to a range of symptoms, including muscle weakness, blurred vision, and in severe cases, respiratory failure.
Safety[edit | edit source]
Due to its high toxicity, the use of stirofos is heavily regulated. In many countries, it is classified as a hazardous substance, and its use is restricted to licensed professionals. Protective clothing and equipment are required when handling the compound.
