Stornoway
Stornoway is the largest town and administrative centre of the Outer Hebrides, also known as the Western Isles, in Scotland. It is located on the east coast of the Isle of Lewis and has a population of approximately 8,000 people.
History[edit | edit source]
Stornoway's history dates back to the Viking Age, when it was a major Viking port. The town's name is derived from the Norse word "Stjórnavágr", which means "steerer's bay". The town was granted a Royal Burgh charter by King James VI in 1607.
Economy[edit | edit source]
The economy of Stornoway is diverse, with key sectors including fishing, crofting, renewable energy, tourism, and the Harris Tweed industry. The town is also home to the Lews Castle, a Victorian era castle built in the mid-19th century.
Culture[edit | edit source]
Stornoway is known for its rich Gaelic culture. The majority of the population speaks Scottish Gaelic, and the town hosts the annual Hebridean Celtic Festival, one of the largest Celtic music festivals in the UK. Stornoway is also famous for its local delicacy, the Stornoway Black Pudding, which has been granted Protected Geographical Indication status under European law.
Transport[edit | edit source]
Stornoway is served by Stornoway Airport, which offers flights to mainland Scotland. The town also has a ferry terminal, with services operated by Caledonian MacBrayne, connecting Stornoway with Ullapool on the Scottish mainland.
Education[edit | edit source]
The town is home to Lews Castle College, part of the University of the Highlands and Islands, which offers a range of courses from National Certificate to degree level.
