Subcontinent
Subcontinent is a large, distinguishable part of a continent, such as North America or Southern Africa. The term is often used to refer to the Indian subcontinent.
Definition[edit | edit source]
A subcontinent is a large part of a continent that is geographically distinctive. It is often separated from the rest of the continent by geographical features such as mountains or bodies of water. The term is most commonly used to refer to the Indian subcontinent, which includes the countries of India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Nepal, Bhutan, and Sri Lanka.
Characteristics[edit | edit source]
Subcontinents are characterized by their distinct geographical features and cultural identities. They often have a unique climate, flora and fauna, and human geography compared to the rest of the continent. For example, the Indian subcontinent is separated from the rest of Asia by the Himalayas, and has a distinct climate and biodiversity.
Examples[edit | edit source]
In addition to the Indian subcontinent, other examples of subcontinents include the Arabian Peninsula, which is part of the Asian continent, and the Scandinavian Peninsula, which is part of the European continent. The Florida Peninsula and the Yucatan Peninsula are examples of subcontinents in North America.
