Team In Training
Team In Training (TNT) is a fundraising program of The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS) designed to support the fight against blood cancer. Since its inception in 1988, Team In Training has grown to become one of the world's largest endurance sports training programs, helping over 650,000 participants to cross finish lines at marathons, half marathons, triathlons, cycling events, and hiking adventures. Participants in the program receive training from certified coaches in a supportive team environment while raising funds for cancer research and patient support services.
History[edit | edit source]
Team In Training began as an innovative idea to raise funds for LLS while providing training for individuals to complete an endurance event. The concept was pioneered by Bruce Cleland, who, in 1988, gathered a team to train for the New York City Marathon in honor of his daughter, a leukemia survivor. The initial team of 38 runners raised $322,000 for LLS, setting the stage for the program's future success.
Program Overview[edit | edit source]
The Team In Training program offers participants personalized training plans, coaching, and the opportunity to be part of a community with a shared goal of ending blood cancer. The program caters to individuals of various fitness levels, from beginners to seasoned athletes, and provides the necessary resources and support for participants to achieve their endurance event goals.
Training[edit | edit source]
Participants receive guidance from certified coaches who provide training schedules, nutritional advice, and injury prevention tips. Training sessions are often conducted in group settings, fostering a sense of camaraderie and mutual support among team members.
Fundraising[edit | edit source]
In exchange for training and support, Team In Training participants commit to raising a predetermined amount of funds for LLS. These funds are critical in supporting LLS's mission to cure leukemia, lymphoma, Hodgkin's disease, and myeloma, and improve the quality of life of patients and their families. Participants are provided with fundraising resources and strategies to help them reach their goals.
Impact[edit | edit source]
The funds raised by Team In Training participants have significantly contributed to advances in blood cancer research, including the development of life-saving treatments and therapies. The program has also played a vital role in raising awareness about blood cancers and the importance of funding research and patient support services.
Events[edit | edit source]
Team In Training participants have the opportunity to take part in a wide range of endurance events, including some of the most prestigious marathons, half marathons, triathlons, and cycling events around the world. The program also offers hiking adventures, providing an alternative for those who prefer outdoor activities that are not centered around competitive racing.
