Leukemia & Lymphoma Society[edit | edit source]

The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS) is a non-profit organization dedicated to finding cures and improving the quality of life for patients with leukemia, lymphoma, Hodgkin's disease, and myeloma. LLS funds research, provides patient support services, and advocates for policies that benefit blood cancer patients.

History[edit | edit source]

The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society was founded in 1949 by Rudolph and Antoinette de Villiers after their son Robert was diagnosed with leukemia. At that time, there were no effective treatments for leukemia, and the de Villiers family was determined to change that. They started LLS with the goal of funding research to find a cure for leukemia.

Over the years, LLS has grown into the world's largest voluntary health organization dedicated to fighting blood cancers. It has invested over $1.3 billion in research, leading to significant advancements in the treatment of leukemia, lymphoma, Hodgkin's disease, and myeloma.

Mission and Programs[edit | edit source]

LLS has a threefold mission: to cure leukemia, lymphoma, Hodgkin's disease, and myeloma, to improve the quality of life for patients and their families, and to advocate for policies that benefit blood cancer patients.

To achieve its mission, LLS runs various programs and initiatives. These include:

  • Research Funding: LLS funds cutting-edge research projects aimed at finding new treatments and cures for blood cancers. It supports both basic and clinical research, as well as innovative approaches such as immunotherapy and precision medicine.
  • Patient Support Services: LLS provides a range of support services to patients and their families. These include financial assistance for treatment-related expenses, educational resources, support groups, and a free helpline staffed by healthcare professionals.
  • Advocacy: LLS advocates for policies that improve access to quality healthcare for blood cancer patients. It works with lawmakers at the local, state, and federal levels to ensure that patients have affordable and comprehensive insurance coverage, as well as access to the latest treatments.

Fundraising and Events[edit | edit source]

LLS relies on fundraising efforts to support its mission. The organization organizes various events throughout the year to raise funds and increase awareness about blood cancers. Some of the notable events include:

  • Light The Night: This annual fundraising walk brings together communities to honor and remember those affected by blood cancers. Participants carry illuminated lanterns to symbolize hope and support for patients and their families.
  • Team In Training: This program allows individuals to train for endurance events such as marathons, triathlons, and cycling races while raising funds for LLS. Participants receive coaching and support throughout their training journey.
  • Man & Woman of the Year: This fundraising competition recognizes individuals who have made a significant impact in the fight against blood cancers. Candidates compete to raise the most funds, and the winners are crowned Man and Woman of the Year.
