Teletón (Chile) is a charity event held annually in Chile to raise funds for children with disabilities. The event is organized by the Teletón Foundation, which operates a network of rehabilitation centers across the country. The first Teletón was held in 1978, and it has since become one of the most significant charity events in Chile.

History[edit | edit source]

The Teletón was founded by Mario Kreutzberger, better known by his stage name Don Francisco. Inspired by similar events in other countries, Kreutzberger aimed to create a large-scale fundraising event to support children with disabilities. The first Teletón took place on December 8-9, 1978, and successfully raised over 13 million Chilean pesos.

Format[edit | edit source]

The Teletón is a 27-hour television broadcast that features performances by local and international artists, testimonials from families who have benefited from the foundation, and live reports from various locations across Chile. The event is broadcast on all major Chilean television networks, including TVN, Canal 13, Mega, and Chilevisión.

Rehabilitation Centers[edit | edit source]

The funds raised during the Teletón are used to operate and maintain a network of rehabilitation centers known as Instituto Teletón. These centers provide comprehensive care, including physical therapy, occupational therapy, and psychological support, to children with disabilities. As of 2023, there are 14 Instituto Teletón centers across Chile.

Impact[edit | edit source]

The Teletón has had a significant impact on the lives of children with disabilities in Chile. It has raised awareness about the challenges faced by these children and their families and has provided essential services to improve their quality of life. The event has also inspired similar initiatives in other Latin American countries.

Criticism[edit | edit source]

Despite its success, the Teletón has faced criticism over the years. Some critics argue that the event perpetuates a charity model that relies on public donations rather than advocating for systemic changes to support people with disabilities. Others have raised concerns about the transparency of the funds raised and the allocation of resources.
