Tepoxalin

Tepoxalin is a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) that is primarily used in veterinary medicine. It is marketed under the brand name Zubrin.

Pharmacology

Tepoxalin works by inhibiting the enzymes cyclooxygenase and lipoxygenase, both of which are involved in the production of prostaglandins and leukotrienes. These substances are responsible for inflammation and pain. By inhibiting their production, Tepoxalin reduces inflammation and provides analgesic effects.

Uses

Tepoxalin is used to treat pain and inflammation associated with osteoarthritis in dogs. It is also used for the management of postoperative pain in dogs.

Side Effects

Like other NSAIDs, Tepoxalin can cause gastrointestinal side effects such as vomiting, diarrhea, and loss of appetite. Other potential side effects include changes in behavior, jaundice, and increased thirst and urination.

Contraindications

Tepoxalin should not be used in dogs with known hypersensitivity to it. It should also be used with caution in dogs with pre-existing liver, kidney, or heart disease.
