Terry's
Terry's is a British chocolate and confectionery maker, best known for its Terry's Chocolate Orange and Terry's All Gold products. The company was founded by Joseph Terry in 1823 who started a small sweet shop and bakery in York, England.
History[edit]
Joseph Terry started the business after he completed his apprenticeship as a chemist. In 1828, he married Harriet Atkinson, a local grocer's daughter, and used her dowry to expand his business. He began selling cakes, sweets, and other confectionery products. The business was initially known as Terry's of York.
Products[edit]
Terry's is best known for its Terry's Chocolate Orange and Terry's All Gold products. The Chocolate Orange, a ball of chocolate flavoured with orange oil and shaped into segments, was introduced in 1932. Terry's All Gold, a selection of milk and dark chocolates, was first sold in 1931.
Ownership[edit]
Terry's was family-owned until 1963, when it was sold to United Biscuits. It changed hands several times before being bought by Kraft Foods in 1993. In 2012, Kraft split into two companies, and Terry's became part of Mondelez International.
Closure and Legacy[edit]
The Terry's factory in York closed in 2005, with production moving to other Mondelez sites in Europe. The factory site has since been redeveloped into a mixed-use site known as The Chocolate Works. Despite the closure, Terry's products continue to be popular, particularly in the UK.
