Tetley's Brewery
Tetley's Brewery was a regional brewery founded in 1822 by Joshua Tetley in Leeds, West Yorkshire, England. It became one of the largest breweries in the United Kingdom and was known for its Tetley's Bitter and Tetley's Mild beers. The brewery was a significant part of the local economy and culture until its closure in 2011.
History[edit | edit source]
Joshua Tetley established the brewery in 1822, initially producing a range of ales. The brewery expanded rapidly, and by the mid-19th century, it had become one of the largest in the region. In 1897, Tetley's merged with Walkers of Warrington to form Tetley Walker, further increasing its market presence.
During the 20th century, Tetley's continued to grow, acquiring several smaller breweries and expanding its product range. The brewery was known for its innovative brewing techniques and high-quality products. In 1961, Tetley's was acquired by Allied Breweries, which later became part of Carlsberg Group.
Products[edit | edit source]
Tetley's Brewery was best known for its Tetley's Bitter, a traditional English bitter, and Tetley's Mild, a lower-alcohol ale. The brewery also produced a range of seasonal and specialty beers, including Tetley's Gold and Tetley's Imperial.
Closure[edit | edit source]
In 2011, Carlsberg Group announced the closure of Tetley's Brewery in Leeds, citing the need to consolidate production at other facilities. The closure marked the end of nearly 190 years of brewing tradition in Leeds. However, the Tetley's brand continues to be produced under license by other breweries.
Legacy[edit | edit source]
The former Tetley's Brewery site has been redeveloped into a cultural and arts center known as The Tetley, preserving the heritage of the brewery and its impact on the local community. The Tetley's brand remains popular, and its beers are still enjoyed by many.
