Tetlin
Tetlin is a small community located in the U.S. state of Alaska. It is part of the Southeast Fairbanks Census Area. Tetlin is known for its rich wildlife and the Tetlin National Wildlife Refuge, which is a major attraction for birdwatching enthusiasts.
Geography[edit | edit source]
Tetlin is located at 63°23′17″N 142°32′3″W. According to the United States Census Bureau, the community has a total area of 11.9 square miles, all of it land. The community is located near the Tetlin River, which is a tributary of the Tanana River.
Demographics[edit | edit source]
As of the census of 2000, there were 127 people, 44 households, and 29 families residing in the community. The population density was 10.7 people per square mile. The racial makeup of the community was 12.60% White, 84.25% Native American, and 3.15% from two or more races.
Tetlin National Wildlife Refuge[edit | edit source]
The Tetlin National Wildlife Refuge is a 700,000-acre (2,800 km2) wildlife refuge located south and west of the community of Tetlin. It was established to conserve and manage wildlife and their habitats, including waterfowl and other migratory birds, moose, caribou, and furbearers. The refuge also provides opportunities for subsistence use by local residents.
Education[edit | edit source]
The community is served by the Alaska Gateway School District. Tetlin School is a K-12 rural school, and it is connected to the district's other schools via video-conferencing technology.
Healthcare[edit | edit source]
Tetlin is served by the Tanana Chiefs Conference, which provides comprehensive health services for Alaska Natives. The nearest hospital is in Fairbanks, which is approximately 230 miles away.
Transportation[edit | edit source]
Tetlin is accessible by the Alaska Highway, and it also has a state-owned public-use airport, the Tetlin Airport.
