Teucrium marum

From WikiMD's Food, Medicine & Wellness Encyclopedia

Teucrium marum is a species of germander. Its common names include cat thyme and kitty crack. Despite its name, it is not related to thyme or to catnip, but cats are attracted to it in a similar way.

Description[edit | edit source]

Teucrium marum is a perennial plant that belongs to the mint family (Lamiaceae). It is native to the western Mediterranean region, particularly in Spain, Morocco, and parts of France. The plant grows up to 30 cm high and has a woody base. Its leaves are small, grey-green, and aromatic. The flowers are small, pink to purple, and bloom in late summer.

Cultivation[edit | edit source]

Teucrium marum is a hardy plant that prefers well-drained soil and full sun. It is drought-tolerant and can be grown in poor soils. It is often used in rock gardens and as a ground cover. The plant can be propagated by seeds, cuttings, or division.

Uses[edit | edit source]

Teucrium marum has been used in traditional medicine for its antiseptic, tonic, and stimulant properties. It is also used as a cat attractant, similar to catnip. However, it should be used with caution as it can cause irritation and allergic reactions in some people and animals.
