The Institute of Cancer Research
The Institute of Cancer Research (ICR) is a public research institute and a constituent college of the University of London in London, United Kingdom, specialising in oncology. It was founded in 1909 as a research department of the Royal Marsden Hospital and joined the University of London in 2003.

The ICR was founded in 1909 as the research department of the Royal Marsden Hospital. It was originally funded by a donation from Ernest Samuel Montagu, the 2nd Viscount Samuel. The ICR became an independent charity in 1949 and joined the University of London in 2003.
Research[edit | edit source]
The ICR conducts research into the causes of cancer and ways to prevent, diagnose and treat it. It has made significant contributions to the understanding of cancer biology, the development of new cancer drugs and the design of innovative clinical trials. The ICR's research is organised into divisions, each focusing on a specific aspect of cancer research.

The ICR is organised into several divisions, each focusing on a specific aspect of cancer research. These include the Division of Breast Cancer Research, the Division of Clinical Studies, the Division of Molecular Pathology, and the Division of Radiotherapy and Imaging.
Achievements[edit | edit source]
The ICR has made significant contributions to the understanding of cancer biology and the development of new cancer drugs. It has been involved in the development of more than 20 cancer drugs, including abiraterone for prostate cancer and temozolomide for brain tumours.
Collaboration[edit | edit source]
The ICR collaborates with a number of other research institutions, both in the UK and internationally. These include the Francis Crick Institute, the Wellcome Trust, and the National Cancer Institute in the United States.
