Theresa Tam

Theresa Tam is a Canadian physician and public health expert who currently serves as the Chief Public Health Officer of Canada. She has been in this role since 2017, succeeding Gregory Taylor.

Early Life and Education[edit | edit source]

Tam was born in British Hong Kong and moved to the United Kingdom with her family when she was a child. She later moved to Canada for her higher education. She completed her medical degree at the University of Nottingham and then pursued a residency in pediatrics at the University of Alberta. She also holds a fellowship in community medicine from the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada.

Career[edit | edit source]

Tam began her career in public health in the 1990s, working for the Ontario Ministry of Health. In 2003, she joined the Public Health Agency of Canada (PHAC), where she has held various leadership roles. She was appointed as the Deputy Chief Public Health Officer in 2012 and took over as the Chief Public Health Officer in 2017.

As the Chief Public Health Officer, Tam has been instrumental in leading Canada's public health response to various health crises, including the opioid crisis, the legalization of cannabis, and the COVID-19 pandemic. She has been recognized for her efforts to promote public health and prevent disease.

Recognition[edit | edit source]

In 2020, Tam was named one of the 100 Most Influential People by Time magazine for her leadership during the COVID-19 pandemic.
